After over eight years of service as the Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada County and North Lake Tahoe, Dena Valin announced in early January that she will be stepping down to pursue another opportunity in the local non-profit sector.

Dr. Valin’s experience will be sorely missed by all in the community who have worked with her to grow the mentoring programs that Big Brothers Big Sisters makes possible.

“Dena has guided this agency through an incredible transition these past eight years,” said Kelly Newell, president of the agency’s board of directors. “We will certainly miss her leadership, in-depth knowledge and positive attitude, and we wish her the very best with her future endeavors in the non-profit world. We’re happy to say that, while it will be difficult to fill her shoes, she has left everything in place for this agency to continue supporting the kids already in our programs and growing the number of children we serve.”

Valin oversaw a greater than 100 percent increase in the number of children served in our local Big Brothers Big Sisters agency’s programs, including the expansion of the agency’s service area to the Truckee and North Lake Tahoe region.

“It has been a real honor to work with this agency and all of the wonderful people involved,” said Valin. “I’m appreciative of the experience and am confident it will be in good hands moving forward.”

Valin will continue to serve as Executive Director through February 8, 2013, at which point the Board of Directors plans to appoint an Interim Executive Director to oversee the day-to-day administrative duties of running the agency while it conducts an extensive search for a new Executive Director to take the helm at the agency. Valin will stay connected with the agency as a Big Sister to her Little Brother of 8 years.

All current programs and mentoring relationships will continue to be supported as usual by the Big Brothers Big Sisters professional staff. And any Bigs, Littles or the families of those involved in our programs are welcome to contact Board Vice President Paul Raymore at (530) 277-7894 or paul@bigsofnc.org if they have any questions.
